Man shot dead during road acquisition in south Los Angeles

Los Angeles: A 23-year-old man was shot dead on Friday night while occupying a south Los Angeles street, police said.

Officers responded to the attack with a deadly weapon call near 54th Street and Manhattan Place at about 11:55 p.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said they rushed to the ground to see a man with bullet injuries as several vehicles and pedestrians were passing through the area.

Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim is not being revealed till the family issues a notification, the officials said.

In recent years, road acquisition has become a regular occurrence in Los Angeles County neighborhoods, where drivers perform stunts in the middle of busy intersections or race their vehicles on residential streets as viewers watch, posting videos on social media. These gatherings have sometimes become fatal, with shootings and vehicle accidents.

The Los Angeles Police Department has joined other California law enforcement agencies in stepping up efforts to crack down on the illegal incident, including seizing the vehicles of anyone who participated or attended the road acquisition. The authorities are also pushing for a state law that calls for stiffer penalties for those engage in such activities.
